New Research Links Pigmentation Genes to Increased Risk for Uveal Melanoma

A new study from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and Perlmutter Cancer Center of NYU School of Medicine has linked the pigmentation genes that dictate eye color to an increased risk for uveal melanoma.

Researchers reportedly examined samples from more than 270 patients with uveal melanoma and found five genetic mutations significantly associated with risk for developing the disease. Three of those associations occurred in a genetic region that determines eye color.

According to the research team, their findings reportedly indicate for the first time a shared genetic susceptibility to both skin and uveal melanoma, and they expect the data will fuel the formation of comprehensive, systematic analysis of inherited genome data in large groups of uveal melanoma patients.
