Stark State College Launches New Ophthalmic Technology Program

Stark State College Launches New Ophthalmic Technology Program

This fall, Stark State College in Ohio launches its new ophthalmic technology program for students who wish to pursue a career as an ophthalmic technician or ophthalmic assistant.

The program was reportedly developed at the requests of ophthalmologists in Stark County and surrounding areas to fill the increasing need for well-trained ophthalmic personnel. Twelve students will be admitted to the new program each fall, through which the college offers both an ophthalmic technician associate degree and an ophthalmic assistant one-year certificate. Students will be offered a combination of classroom, lab and clinical learning experiences through the program's three exam rooms and "treatment" room where students can simulate patient care.

Stark State is reportedly the first college in Ohio to offer an associate of applied science degree in ophthalmic technology, and one of fewer than 30 in the United States. The school is holding an open house for the new program this Thursday, August 25, from 6-8pm.
