UW Researchers Discover New Type of Neuron

Researchers from the University of Washington Health Sciences have discovered a new type of neuron in the retina of mice, uncovering a new way to convey information within the retina.

The new neuron, named GluMI, reportedly acts like a bipolar neuron — those that relay information from photoreceptors to ganglion cells — but anatomically resembles a monopolar neuron, which according to researchers are not normally contacted directly by photoreceptors. The research team reportedly plans to continue studying GluMI to explore its role in the visual function.

The research findings were recently published in the journal Current Biology.
