Clinical Trial Underway to Evaluate Use of Cord-Blood Cells to Treat Dry AMD

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is taking part in a national phase 2 clinical trial that is examining the safety and tolerability of using cord-blood cells to treat the dry form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

According to UIC, the trial is evaluating the use of multipotent cells taken from umbilical cord blood that are coaxed into differentiating into RPE-like cells in the lab. These cells are then injected into the retina in the hopes they will prevent further loss of rods and cones, and maybe even help restore vision.
