Topcon Joins IBM Watson Health Collaboration

Ophthalmic device manufacturer Topcon has been named one of 16 partners in IBM's Watson Health medical imaging collaborative.

According to an official press release from IBM, the collaborative aims to bring cognitive imaging into daily practice to help doctors address a variety of health issues, including eye health. Members of the collective will reportedly work through Watson to extract insights from previously "invisible" unstructured imaging data and combine that with a broad variety of data from other sources, including various medical reports, journal articles and lab results.

Topcon and its subsidiary companies ifa Systems AG and Inoveon will reportedly be training Watson on ophthalmic imaging needs. Topcon officials believe the collaboration will help them further research partnerships with key opinion leaders, while the new services and products developed by Watson Health will aid global clinical and research experts in improving the quality and efficiency of eye care.
