MedInsight Research Institute and Center for Drug Repurposing

Earlier this month, the MedInsight Research Institute and Center for Drug Repurposing at Ariel University presented its latest findings of the repurposed drug dipyridamole in treating pterygium and related dry-eye symptoms at the Israeli Society for Vision and Eye Research (ISVER) conference.

Primarily used to treat angina and prevent stroke, the cardiovascular drug dipyridamole has also had wide applicability for eye disorders and has been researched for various eye ailments including diabetic retinopathy and ocular hypertension. In 2014, MedInsight reportedly published the first case report of a pterygium patient being successfully treated with dipyridamole eye drops.

In its findings presented at ISVER, researchers analyzed outcomes of dry-eye symptoms reported by patients with pterygium and reported a maximum reduction in OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index) scores averaging 52.4 percent during the course of treatment for 25 patients. And some patients reported a complete resolution of symptoms.
