FDA Approves Abbott’s iDesign System for use in LASIK procedures

Abbott

Abbott has received FDA approval for the iDesign Advanced Wavescan Studio system for use in LASIK procedures. This first of its kind, wavefront diagnostic aberrometry is able to detect imperfections in the eye that result in poor vision with high-definition scanning technology. The precise scan captures five different optical measurements, enabling the surgeon to provide a more customized LASIK treatment specifically tailored to the patient’s eye. The three-second scan produces a 3D image and accurate 'blueprint' of the eye, detailing every characteristic. In addition, the technology can allow surgeons to better screen patients who were not previously candidates for LASIK.

The iDesign system uses the same technology, pioneered by Abbott scientists, developed to measure the mirrors in NASA's $8 billion James Webb Space Telescope that will provide astronomers with high-resolution images of the universe.

This approval is one of nearly 30 product approvals or launches in major markets this year for Abbott’s vision business.

Abbott plans to fully launch the iDesign system in the U.S. in June, 2015.
