Mile High Ophthalmics Launches Innovative Versus Ophthalmic Caliper at ASCRS in San Diego

Mile High Ophthalmics, LLC

Mile High Ophthalmics, LLC officially launched their new VERUS ophthalmic caliper today at the ASCRS Annual Symposium in San Diego. VERUS is designed to help surgeons create a round, centered capsulorhexis, as part of cataract surgery.

Developed at the University of Colorado School of Medicine at the Anschutz Medical Campus (Department of Ophthalmology) by a research group led by Malik Kahook, M.D., VERUS is the culmination of years of research and product development covering various methods of creating an anterior capsulotomy. The standard of care is still a manual capsulotomy, which is difficult to learn and inherently imprecise. More recently, femtosecond lasers have been increasing in popularity, but they have their own disadvantages, including increased time per procedure and more expensive equipment and disposables, all driving up the cost of preforming cataract surgery.

VERUS is designed to provide surgeons with a way to create a round and repeatable capsulorhexis, while minimizing the impact to procedure time and cost. Robert Cionni, MD said “Using VERUS typically adds less than 30 seconds to my surgery time and I know I am going to get a nice, round 5 mm capsulorhexis exactly where I want it.”

According to Mile High Ophthalmics CEO, James Dennewill, “The beauty of VERUS is its simplicity. Like a ruler for drawing a straight line or a compass for drawing a circle, it just makes sense to use a guide for this critical step in cataract surgery.”
