Ophthalmic Women Leaders Announces Launch of 2014 Summer/Fall Mentoring Program

Washington, D.C. – June 5, 2014 - Ophthalmic Women Leaders (OWL) has announced the launch of its restructured, six-month mentoring program for the Summer/Fall session. The organization, a non-profit developing diverse leadership to advance ophthalmic innovation and patient care, is currently accepting mentor and mentee applications through June 30, 2014. The session, structured to develop meaningful relationships and provide opportunity for mutual professional growth, will begin in early July and continue through January.

The six-month-long guided program brings together OWL members from across ophthalmology to support and learn from one another.  Mentors and mentees selected for participation will follow a guided program including a kick-off webinar, monthly mentoring meetings conducted in person or by phone/video call, and coaching sessions with program facilitators.

“OWL is incredibly excited to launch this initiative, which will offer members a valuable program designed to foster personal and professional growth,” said Executive Director Molly Schar. “We are fortunate to have a network of intelligent, driven, and dedicated individuals willing to share their insights and experiences. I am confident that in the months ahead, we will create important, impactful relationships that serve both parties for years to come.”

According to LinkedIn's latest study on women and mentoring, though 82% of women agree that mentoring is important to career success, fewer than 20% have ever had a mentor.  Interestingly, the vast majority of women who have never been a mentor say it's because no one ever asked. OWL’s Mentoring Program aims to connect potential mentors with potential mentees in an effort to close that gap.
