Clarity Medical Systems, Inc. Receives Second Landmark Ophthalmic Patent

Additional Patent Issued to Clarity MSI for Continuous Intraoperative Wavefront Aberrometry Deployment

Pleasanton, CA September 5, 2013 – The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted Clarity Medical Systems, Inc. U.S. Patent 8506083 Compact Wavefront Sensor Module and its Attachment. This patent includes the attachment of the compact HOLOS wavefront sensor onto a surgical microscope or slit lamp or, the integration into a surgical microscope or slit lamp. This latest patent is another continuation of Clarity’s expanding HOLOS™ technology portfolio.

For over twenty-five years aberrometers have been used in eye care to measure patient’s pre-operative refraction, also known as their prescription. Used by ophthalmologists, aberrometers are an essential tool when accurate refractive measurements of the patient’s eyes are critical, such as LASIK and refractive procedures. The underlying technology employed in these existing aberrometry systems is largely based on decades old technology initially deployed in astronomy. These older technologies typically have slow acquisition rates and only provide a static output, or a single refractive snapshot at a moment in time. Additionally their relatively large footprint, while well suited for the typical table-top applications, has hindered their use during refractive cataract surgery and has practically precluded their integration into cataract surgical microscopes.

The growing logic among ophthalmic surgeons is that intra-operative aberrometry can assist them in achieving visual outcomes for cataract surgery that closely resemble their positive refractive outcomes routinely achieved in other corneal refractive procedures such as LASIK.

Clarity President and CEO Keith Mullowney says, “ The compact size of HOLOS IntraOp™ will help ophthalmologists rapidly and efficiently measure their patient’s refractive state during cataract surgery, as well as provide real-time surgical guidance while preserving key surgeon ergonomics.”

Clarity’s first product application of this unique technology will be for refractive cataract surgery with HOLOS IntraOp, an intraoperative module that attaches to any standard surgical microscope to assist surgeons in monitoring and confirming the accurate refractive status of their patient’s eye throughout all phases of the surgical procedure. Additionally, HOLOS IntraOp will allow surgeons to more effectively treat and manage astigmatism, by enabling real-time orientation and feedback of their Toric IOLs. In femtosecond laser cataract surgery, HOLOS IntraOp will also help surgeons to accurately guide the desired astigmatic surgical correction. Ultimately the goal is to aid cataract surgeons in achieving “emmetropia” for their patients, better known as 20/20 vision. Worldwide 22 million cataract surgeries are performed annually.
