Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research and University of South Florida Co-sponsor Bioscience Seminar on Glaucoma Proteins

NEI Molecular Biologist Stanislav Tomarev, PhD, Led Seminar

Tampa, Fla. (February 4, 2013) — The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research (LEITR) and University of South Florida (USF) Health recently co-sponsored a Bioscience Seminar. Stanislav Tomarev, PhD, Chief, Molecular Mechanisms of Glaucoma Section, Laboratory of Molecular and Developmental Biology, National Eye Institute (NEI), spoke on proteins in glaucoma, and more specifically about functions in the normal development and pathology of olfactomedin domain-containing proteins.

The seminar is part of the Spring 2013 curriculum, which LEITR hosted and co-sponsored with USF Health.  More than 30 students and guests attended the event, which included a tour of LEITR’s Eye Bank and Ocular Research Center and Dr. Tomarev’s presentation and interactive discussion on protein interactions in glaucoma.

“The Lions Eye Institute was the perfect backdrop for the seminar,” said Dr. Tomarev. “Students were able to see first-hand what goes into procuring high-quality tissue for research in glaucoma and other areas of ophthalmic science. NEI, USF and LEITR have a shared goal of deepening the understanding of glaucoma disease processes through sound scientific research.”

“The Lions Eye Institute provides a one-of-a-kind resource for the eye research field,” said Chad A. Dickey, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Molecular Medicine, USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute & James A. Haley Veteran’s Hospital, University of South Florida. “The volume of quality tissue that LEITR can provide is a game-changer. It introduces a whole new realm of research that before did not seem possible simply due to the limited availability of high-quality tissue.”
